Anima City (アニマシティ Animashiti) is an independent city-state and home to a species of anthropomorphic animals called Beastman. The city is the main setting where the plot of Brand New Animal unfolds. Anima City is located in the 93rd ward of Japan.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

The city is surrounded by water and isolated from human society. The mayor and founder of the city is Barbara Rose. The city is contained in the Beastman Special Zone and is protected under the Beastman Territory Law. Sylvasta Pharmaceuticals was heavily involved in the development of the city.

Under the Special Beastman Territory Law, information about human society is censored and all attempts will be redirected to the Anima City homepage.[2]

The city is isolated from human society and provides beastmen a home that they can live and flourish freely without the danger and discrimination that is faced by human society.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The city situated on a peninsula surrounded by water and mountains to the back, and only accessible through mountain tunnels and ferry from the human mainland. The city resides in the Beastman Special Zone.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

"Ever since we established the Beastman Territory Law, we have managed to develop Anima City, a city where Beastmen can truly live themselves."

- Rose

Founding[edit | edit source]

Due to civil unrest between beastmen and humans, Chairman Rose and Prime Minister Shiramizu reached an agreement to create an independent territory for beastmen to reside in. The policy came to be known as the Beastman Territory Law which enforces the Beastman Special Zone. In order to fund the creation of Anima City, Rose partnered with Silvasta Pharmaceuticals in the Beastman Special Zone Development Project. Anima City was erected in 2011.[3]

10th Anniversary Festival[edit | edit source]

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the city, a large festival was held. Attendees appeared in their beastman form with Ginrou shaped masks. The festival began with a speech given by Mayor Rose thanking the citizens and wishing prosperity for the city. The festival had live performances, live music, and food stalls. There was a terrorist attempt to ruin the festival but the situation was quickly controlled and luckily nobody was injured.[4]

Society[edit | edit source]

While initial appearance to those outside of Anima City makes it seem "flawless", there exists a dark hidden society that reflects that of normal human society and counteracts the tranquility and sanctuary that Anima City is perceived as to the public. The official language appears to be Japanese, with some signage in English. Many aspects of the society like social media seem to mirror modern Japan.

Many residents of Anima City seem to have a varying degree of faith in the beastman deity Ginrou. Beastmen like Melissa have shrines in their homes for worshiping the Silver Wolf, and children still tell tales about the mythical beast as well. Most residents can agree that Ginrou is a symbol of hope for beastmen during times of need. However, there are people who refuse to believe in Ginrou, especially residents in the poorer areas of Anima City like in the Slums.

Apart from the religious aspect, Ginrou is still strongly ingrained in beastmen society. The 10-year anniversary festival had a Ginrou float and attendees wore Ginrou-shaped masks. Ginrou is also referred to in everyday speech similar to the usage of God in the real world.

Inspiration[edit | edit source]

James Gilleard was the concept artist and helped brainstorm for the city. Many of the influences stem from developed coastal mountainous cities, namely Hong Kong. The skyscraper tower in his art resembles the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, and the Space Needle in Seattle, USA. The tree structures are inspired by the Supertrees in Singapore. The geography and landscape of the city are inspired by Gibraltar.[5]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • During the 10-year anniversary festival, a billboard with Inferno Cop is shown.
  • If the assumptions that the current year is 2021 based on Michiru's ID card and history are true, then we can deduce that Anima City was founded 10 years prior in 2011.[3]
